1896 – 1977 · Spreading Krishna Consciousness across the world
At 26, the young Abhay Charan De met Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura in Calcutta. In that very first meeting, he received a life-changing instruction — to preach Krishna consciousness in English throughout the world. He carried this instruction in his heart with deep faith for over three decades before he could fully act on it.
In pursuance of his spiritual master's order, he founded the English fortnightly magazine Back to Godhead — writing, typing, editing, and even distributing every issue himself, keeping it alive through years of hardship with almost no outside help.
At the age of 69, Srila Prabhupada boarded the cargo ship Jaladuta bound for America with only a few rupees, a trunk of sacred books, and complete faith in Krishna. He suffered two heart attacks during the difficult crossing, yet arrived in Boston with nothing but his mission and an unshakeable conviction.
In New York City, Srila Prabhupada founded the International Society for Krishna Consciousness with seven guiding purposes — chief among them, to spread the teachings of the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam and unite people beyond every barrier of nationality, race, and religion.
Though his books earned him millions of dollars in royalties, Srila Prabhupada kept nothing for himself. He founded the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust, directing every rupee toward printing more books and building temples — a legacy that today spans over 60 crore books in 87+ languages.
Srila Prabhupada left this world on November 14, 1977, in Vrindavan, his final words a soft chanting of Hare Krishna. In just twelve years he had founded 108 temples across six continents. As his disciples say — a single moon is enough in the sky, but he created many moons.

Since 1976, ISKCON Hyderabad Abids has served as a spiritual home for thousands of devotees and visitors — through daily darshan, prasadam distribution, Bhagavatam classes, and community seva. Located in the heart of the city near Nampally Station, the temple has been a landmark of devotion for half a century.
Janmashtami 2026, on September 4, marks the Divine Appearance of Lord Sri Krishna. Every offering made here goes directly toward making this celebration a historic event for Hyderabad and all of ISKCON India.
